RE: My first Tow...weight problem HELP!

Another thing that would be nice to know is the trailers hitch weight. You can get a good approxrimation of the weight by subrtracting the weight on your trucks rear wheels with and without the trailer attached. The difference in these two weights is pretty close to your actual hitch weight. It would be your actual hitch weight, but then there is some matters of lever arms etc. i.e. the distance from your hitch ball to the rear axle. If you want to know the actual hitch weight just detach your trailer on the truck scale with the hitch support on one area of the truck scale and the trailer wheels on and segmanet of the scale. Knowing the hitch weight will be used to determine which hitch to install.

RE: 12V question

It seems to me that there is a fuse in the line that runs from the batteries to the fuse box. Perhaps that is blown...

RE: Equipment needed to get started for 5th wheel camping

I would suggest that you buy a moderate grade of sewer hose to begin with. They last about as long as the top of the line hoses. For me I have one leveling board that is long enough for the two tandem wheels to sit on. Then I have four boards that just accommodate one wheel. I have put 45° angles on each end of all the boards. With this set of boards I can get the fiver wheel two boards high by using the long board as a base and the single boards in various manners as I back up or go forward onto the next level of boards. I had to make sure that the single boards would fit in the space between the tandem wheels so I could install them before driving onto them. Clear as mud huh.. grin.

RE: 12V question

I would think that you have a fuse blown somewhere. Are you sure there are only two fuses. My DC fuse box on my fiver has about ten fuses for various circuits. I would think that you must have a fuse box somewhere that you don't know about yet.

RE: Husky or Pull Rite hitch- easiest one to use?

Like the originator of this post we drive long bed trucks so we do not need a slider hitch. So, we bought a PullRite 20.5K super 5th hitch for our truck in 1996. At the time, we were pulling a 34ft CarriLite. When we purchased a new truck in 2005 we moved the hitch from our old truck to the new one. We now pull a 30 ft Cameo. All in all, we have pulled fiver for over 100,000 miles with our PullRite hitch and it has never let us down. We do inspect and lubricate it regularly. We had one incident with this hitch about five years ago. I think it was caused by me getting the trailer hitch pin stuck in hitch wrong. Anyway, that evening when I unhitched I saw the arm, that swings around the trailer's hitch pin, laying in the truck bed. I don't know how long it had been there. We had driven about 300 miles that day, but the bar that slides behind the hitch arm held the trailer pin in the hitch with no problem whatsoever. I found the pin that the arm is mounted on was bent and also laying in the bed. I took it to a welder who welded the pin back on the hitch. We put the arm on and it has been there ever since. That made me a believer of the safety back up of the safety locking bar that PullRite uses on their hitches.

RE: New Rig

I'm a Carriage person. I have owned two Carriages - a 1992 Carri Lite and then traded that for a new 2000 Cameo. I have had great luck with both of them. We have pulled our Cameo about 70,000 miles and is holding up very well. We are now getting it ready for another summer trip. I would buy another Cameo when and if I am in the market for a new fiver again.

RE: turn signal to brake feedback help?

The first place I would look would to be sure that I had all the wires connected correctly. Sounds like a turn signal light wire got into the brake wire circuit. Then, check to see that your grounding wires are all hooked up firmly to a good ground.

RE: Diesel Truck Owners I need your advise....

When I buy a vehicle I always go immediatlely for the "out the door price". This includes all dealer fees, taxes and license and anything else the dealer might dream up. After you get the dealers "out the door price" you should not be surprised with any add on fees that the dealer can come up with. This out the door price still allows you to negotiate, but you can do it with confidence on the price you are negotiationg. It works for me. If the dealer won't give me an "out the door price" at the start of the negotiation I go elsewhere. I learned this sometime ago when I was burned on a sales deal by the dealers little add ons that soon add up to big money.

RE: need help with pitch of trailer

I agree your dealer should have helped you set up your rig. By all means, it should ride as level as you can possibly get it.

RE: Microwave quit

You unit can probably be fixed. Since it is most likely a smaller unit you can be take it out and cart it to the repair man. Saves a lot if you don't have to pay the guy to come to you. You can get an estimate on the repair and decide if you want to repair or replace. Frankly, microwaves are not all that expensive.

RE: Dually or not?

I have pulled my fivers with SRW's since 1996. I figure I have pulled fivers about 100,000 miles. My fivers have all been 30 ft in length and I have to say that I have never felt any stability problems. So... with my size units, I don't know why I would want the hassle of DRW's. Well, I guess it does make one look like a stud (grin).. Maybe that's the appeal. Speaking of stability, I once had the left rear wheel blow out on our 1996 F-250 SRW truck on the interstate. The explosion was so violent that it blew the umbilical cord out of the receptacle. We only had the trucks brakes. Other than hearing the noise I had no control problems whatsoever. Thinking back I determined that we damaged that tire in Alaska. I remember that tire going over a big stone when we were following the guide car thru some construction. The tire held up till we were back in Florida on I-75 when it decided to let loose.

RE: Cleaning Bugs Off 5er Nose

Good Luck. These bugs can cover and stick on most anything that hits them at a highway speeds. I don't know of anything that helps that much. I have tried pam, wax and those dryer sheets. They may help a little, but then you have to spend the time putting it on. When en-route, if I want to rid the front cap of bugs, I take one bucket of water, one spray bottle of bug remover and one long handled truck brush. I wet the front with the brush dipped in the bucket. I then spray the bug remover on the brush and go over the whole area. It takes about two more passes with the brush, bug remover and water, but the bugs come off. Then I dump remaining water out of the bucket and go in the fiver and rest.

RE: grease on top of hitch

Yep, another vote for lube plate. But I put a little grease on the kingpin itself where the hitch locks to it. That is the part that actually pulls and slows the trailer. The top plate just holds up weight of the trailer at the pin box. Both are involved in turning a corner. So far they haven't developed a teflon sleeve for that. Just for my info, where did someone find Teflon Lube plates? The one I got at CW was just polypropolene. I'll use it till it wears out, but Teflon is slicker. I think they are all a white colored teflon. At least the ones I use are. I used to buy this teflon in sheets and use it to line the rudder posts of sailboats.

RE: grease on top of hitch

Get yourself a teflon plate that fits around the king pin hitch. It is called a lub plate, but it is just a special cut piece of teflon. It works better than grease with no mess.

RE: Repair PVC Drain without replacing?

If you can get your hands into the area of the crack, that two part epoxy putty will solve your problem. Home Depot sells that expoxy stick in the plumbing department. It is called Plumber's Epoxy or something like that. I repaired a crack in the flushing water bowl of a toilet four years ago with that stuff and it is still holding. I have also repaired the plastic fender on my camper and it worked like a champ. That stuff really works!

RE: What gauge wire should I use ?

Before anyone can give an intelligent answer to your question the amperage draw of the compressor and the length of the wires or cable must be known. After you know this go to this site and calculate your wire gauge. www.westmarine.com/pdf/MarineWire.pdf

RE: Need inputs on leveling 5er when attached to TV...

I just checked the Dexter axle web site. Here is tip number 11 on the proper running of your axles. Tip #11: It is very important to pull your trailer so that it is running level. If the hitch is too high or too low, the trailer axle(s) may be unevenly loaded and can result in premature tire or axle failure. Here is the address of this tip page - http://www.dexteraxle.com/running_gear_tips

RE: What DirecTV channels are on each satellite?

I have had Directv since they first started marketing. I have always used a dish and a receiver and get lots of channels. Why does it matter what channels are on what satellite? I know there must be a reason, but I have not worried about it. I know the HD channels are on another satellite, but there must be some other reason people are wanting to know something about directv channels and satellites.
